Primary Purpose of the Position
Sport and Youth Programs fosters the pursuit of life-long growth by challenging students and participants to acquire “real-world” experiences, skills, knowledge, sport strategies, experiences and an appreciation for physical activity and ethical behavior. In addition to promoting fitness and reducing stress, participation in these programs enhances learning through the understanding of and adherence to rules and policies. Participation also encourages the development of self-esteem through teamwork and individual effort and promotes positive citizenship and sportsmanship. The Sport and Youth Programs develop leadership through success and failure experiences by empowering students to expand self-reliance, by promoting ethical standards, by facilitating group processes and by showing respect for one’s self and others.
The Sport and Youth Programs Coordinator is responsible for certain aspects of participant education at Campus Recreation & Wellness. The Sports Program educates the campus community through meetings, website information, resource material, and through staff and officer trainings, and other student development and mentoring opportunities. Staff trainings for sports officials, site managers, program attendants, camp counselors, and program volunteers include instruction on effective conflict resolution, customer service, and leadership development. The Youth program provides a resource for the children of ECU’s students, faculty and staff as well as the external community by providing programs and experiences that might not otherwise be available. It also fosters the development of future community leaders by giving current ECU students the opportunity to learn skills that they will need to succeed in the global economy. The Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation & Wellness- Sport and Youth Programs.
The Sport and Youth Programs Coordinator is heavily involved in the administrative responsibilities of program development, personnel management, planning, fiscal accountability, staff development, data analysis, documentation via periodic program reports, activity fact folders and annual and semi-annual reviews of programs, technology and equipment for Intramural and Club Sports. The Sport and Youth Programs Coordinator assists in the supervision of para-professional staff (Graduate Assistants and Program Assistants), over 150 part-time student staff, student summer camp director, and summer camp counselors.
